Pooja/Prayer Room Vastu Tips [17 DOs & 19 DON’Ts]

Pooja room – or prayer room – is – and must be – one the most auspicious and sacred rooms of your home. But this “most auspicious and sacred” room needs be as per rules and guidelines of vastu shastra. Since you worship, keep religious texts, idols and images of deity’s and other Godly belongings in this room, hence you must protect this room from negative energies. WHY? To know the answer, just read on.

Once you have made a pooja or prayer room in your home then “the room” automatically starts to attract positivity and harmony. However, if the pooja room is left unprotected then this “attracted” positivity and harmony starts to weaken due to influence of negative energies that – may be – present in your home. Hence, you must take all the required actions and make sure that the pooja room in your home is vastu shastra compliant so that it is capable of enhancing and attracting positive energies in and around your home.

Pooja Room Vastu Tips

How to Make Your Pooja Room Vastu Compliant?

Making a pooja room vastu shastra compliant is a two step process.

The first step that you need to take is to locate the pooja room – obviously – in the most auspicious way. Now, to help you to identify the best possible location for a pooja – or prayer – room in your home, I have made an image, which reveals to you the best location for a pooja room in a home as per vastu shastra.

Pooja Room Vastu Shastra

As you may see in the image above that the best place to locate pooja room is the North-East corner of your home. However – due to any reason – if the North-East corner is unavailable then you can make the pooja room in East or West side of your home.

The next – and the last – step to make a vastu compliant pooja room is to follow all vastu tips and guidelines for pooja room which are mentioned below.

Pooja Room Vastu Tips:

What You Must Follow

  1. As per pooja room vastu, north-east corner of home is best site for pooja place.
  2. East and west are second best locations.
  3. Keep the pooja place on ground floor.
  4. In big plots or factories etc. construct pooja ghar at center; this is very auspicious.
  5. Keep the idols in east and/or west of the prayer room.
  6. Place the idols a few inches (at least an inch) away from wall.
  7. Make sure that all the idols are always in perfect condition.
  8. Have two shutter door of high quality wood for prayer room.
  9. Pooja Room can have doors and windows in north or east walls.
  10. White or light yellow colored marble work in prayer room makes it more auspicious.
  11. Use white, light yellow or light blue colors for walls of pooja room.
  12. You can place a lamp stand in the pooja room in south-east or eastern side.
  13. If the roof of pooja room is pyramid shape then it’s very auspicious.
  14. You can place an Agnikund in the prayer room in south-east corner.
  15. Keep showcases and almirahs towards west or south walls.
  16. Entrance of pooja place must have a threshold.
  17. If the prayer area is in kitchen then keep it in the north-east corner of kitchen; you should face east while praying.

 What You Must Avoid

  1. The pooja place should never be in south direction.
  2. Do not have pooja place in a store-room.
  3. Avoid pooja place in any bedroom. However if there is no option then use the north-east corner of the bedroom as pooja place (but remember this is the last and least favored option). Also remember that while sleeping or lying on bed your feet should not point towards this corner.
  4. Never make pooja room in basement or first or above floors.
  5. Do not have prayer place above, below or next to any toilet or kitchen.
  6. Avoid pooja room or place under a staircase.
  7. Idols should never face south.
  8. Do not chisel off the wall to make place for keeping idols.
  9. Never keep broken idols.
  10. Idols should never be directly in front of the entrance door of prayer room.
  11. Never keep the idols brought from old temples in the prayer room.
  12. Women should not enter the prayer room during menses.
  13. Scenes or photos of crime, battles or of any negative emotions are a strict “no” in the pooja place. Actually you must avoid them in your entire home.
  14. Do not hang photos of animals and birds in the pooja place.
  15. Never have photos of passed away people in the pooja area.
  16. Never keep a dustbin in the pooja place; it reduces positive energy of the room.
  17. No one should sleep in the prayer room (except if the prayer room is in bedroom).
  18. Don’t keep the items in the pooja area that do not belong there.
  19. Never ever – under any circumstance – conceal any money or other valuables in pooja place.

I believe and trust that above vastu tips for pooja room will definitely make your prayer room a very auspicious one.

  • Hi Anoop,

NE room can be your daughter’s room only till the time she is under teen, after that she must not stay in NE room as it leads to delay in marriage and even to divorce in many cases.

    Thanks,
    Admin

    • Anoop

      Dear Sir,

Thanks. Is it OK to use NE room as study room.

      Thanks & Regards,

      Anoop

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi Anoop,

For pooja room NE part of the home is the best. If NE is not possible the try to keep the pooja place in the Northern part of the home.

    Thanks,
    Admin

      Dear Sir,

      Thanks a lot.

As per your advice I have marked 2 position in the living room for Pooja place highlighted in orange and green. Which will be the most preferable one as per the over all plan.

Is NW room good for studies and duaghter’s room? Probably we have to sacrifice this room for guests too.

Also is there any other vastu faults which needs to be addressed. If yes an appropriate suggestion of remedy will be really helpful.

      Thanks & Regards,

      Anoop

        Hi Anoop,

        The orange one seems better.

NW room is good for girls, but that will keep the girl out of the home mostly because NW is the “Air” corner.

        Rest looks good.

Also, I’ll suggest you to start reading article starting @ http://www.vastushastraguru.com/vastu-for-home/

This way you’ll learn vastu shastra and will be able to assess vastu for any home by yourself.

    Hi Anoop,

Please look for better options. The entrance of this flat is SW and that’s the worst entrance in vastu shastra.

    Thanks,
    Admin

      Dear Sir,

Thanks a lot for your opinion.

Attached is another plan which is of higher sqft and on the third floor. This one is an East facing apartment.

Is it ok if we keep the bedroom on North west side and Kids room on South west.
Also please check and let me know if any other flaws are there as per vastu for this apartment.

      Thanks & Regards,

      Anoop

      • VastuShastraAdmin

        Hi Anoop,

This is a much better plan. Keeping kids bedroom in SW will make them the master of the house. They will have to bear all the responsibilities of the house and parents will have to obey to whatever the kids order.

Hence keep the master bedroom in SW and kids bedroom to NW.
Make sure to keep the head in South or West while sleeping. More on this @ http://www.vastushastraguru.com/vastu-sleeping-direction/

        Thanks,

  • Hello Sir
I purchased this flat recently and planning to move in June. I planned room A to be pooja dn study room, Room B for childern’s bed and Room C for master bedroom, Room E is the kitchan. Is this flat good or there are any remedies I need to do before I move there? please give your valuable opinion about this flat.

    • VastuShastraAdmin

      Hi Vasudeo,

The internal arrangement of rooms is good, however, the entrance is towards the SE side of the flat and that entrance (as per vastu shastra) is prone to bring illness to the inmates.

You can read remedies for that @ http://www.vastushastraguru.com/south-east-vastu-dosh-remedies

      Thanks,
      Admin

      • Many Many Dhanawad for the Reply. Will surely follow the instructions given in the remidy section. Also I want to ask “do I need to consult Vastu specialist for the arrangement of furniture? or just follow the instructions on the web site?
        Thanks & Regards,
        Vasudeo

        • VastuShastraAdmin

          Hi Vasudeo,

          You’re welcome.
As per vastu shastra, always try to keep the North and East portion of every room lighter than South and West.

          Thanks,
          Admin

    Hi Mahathi,

The kitchen in center is actually a huge vastu defect. It’s like burning the stomach of vastu purusha. It may cause impotency for woman, stomach related diseases and much more.

I’ll suggest you to go through the article @ http://www.vastushastraguru.com/vastu-remedies-north-east-kitchen/ and apply the mentioned remedies.

Please make sure not to apply the inverted bowl remedy for your kitchen.

    Thanks,
    Admin

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi Mahathi,

Instead of a cabinet arrangement, I’ll suggest you to go for a wooden or marble (white) temple and put curtains on it (during those days). Prefer marble temple.

If possible, the try to place God towards the North or East side of your home. However, if nothings possible then “P” is also ok.

I can see that the kitchen in your home seems to be at the center. Is that so? If yes, then it’s a huge vastu defect.

Also, I can see that NW and SW corners have cuts and that’s again a vastu defect.

    Thanks,
    Admin

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    You’re welcome 🙂

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi Michelle,

You can have a temple but it must follow vastu rule as mentioned in the very same article.

While praying, as per vastu shastra, one must face either North or East. You can also face NE but never SW.

    Thanks,
    Admin

    Hi Manjunath,

This is a SW facing house and will never allow the resident’s life to be happy.
If this isn’t your own home then please shift to another one.

If this is your own house then apply the remedies that I’ve mentioned in SW vastu dosh and remedies article @ http://www.vastushastraguru.com/south-west-vastu-dosh-remedies/

Also, I’d suggest you to consider selling this house (if it’s your own) and moving to a North or East facing one.

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi Manjunath,

A SW door is the most inauspicious in vastu shastra.
    Here’s a link that’ll help you: http://www.vastushastraguru.com/south-west-vastu-dosh-remedies/

By the way, are you facing any specific problems in your life such as lack of finances, stability and health related issues?

    Thanks,

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi,

A square room is the best; if it’s rectangle then make sure that the ration of length:breadth is not more than 1:1.5

    • Anoop

      Hello Sir,

I am planning to purchase a new flat in Chennai. Attached you can find the floor plan of the flat.

After reading the vastu tips i feel many of the things are not right as per vastu. The 2 main observed facts are about Master bedroom & Another room (planned for my daughter who is 1 yr old)

As per the plan Master bedroom appears in south east direction. Is there any particular remedy which we can follow.

Kids room planned is in north east direction and the north east corner is good for Pooja room. Instead can we place pooja place near the dining place which is highlighted in orange colour.

Need your valuable suggestions and recomendation.

      Thanks & Regards,

      Anoop

      • VastuShastraAdmin

        Hi Anoop,

Please mark North direction in the plan.

        Thanks,
        Admin

  • VastuShastraAdmin

    Hi Green Vision,

A bathroom above Pooja room is not recommended as per vastu shastra. If you move the pooja room to opposite closet does it goes under the stairs? If yes then that’s also not recommended.

    • Green Vision

Hello, if I move pooja room in opposite closet then it will not be under stairs. it will be in north east quadrant but not in north east corner. Is that okay? Also, will it be issue if I keep pooja room in same place if I make false partition from all sides to make room in room?

      • VastuShastraAdmin

        Hi Green Vision,

Making false partition is ok but moving pooja room is much better.

        Thanks

        • Green Vision

Thank you for all your responses.

          • VastuShastraAdmin

            Welcome.

  • Shelli Swami

Sir, our pooja room is adjacent to the kitchen and is placed in the center of the house. Is it ok. The door of kitchen and pooja room are separate .

    • VastuShastraAdmin

      HI Shelli,

A Pooja room at the center of the home is allowed.

      Thanks,
      Admin

  • prabhakar reddy

bath room construct back side of the pooja room is it ok.

    • VastuShastraAdmin

      Hi Prabhakar,

Please send plan of your home for better analysis.

      Thanks,
      Admin
